How to Keep Your Brain Sharp and Young as You Get Older > Anti-Aging

There are many not-so-fun side effects of getting older and many reasons not to look forward to the inevitable march of time. While many of the down sides we tend to focus on though are to do with our bodies failing us, perhaps even worse is when our mind starts to give in, and we find ourselves becoming more forgetful and much slower in our thinking. Even if we don’t necessarily suffer from any specific condition such as dementia, we can still find ourselves getting slower in our thoughts and struggling to keep up with everyone else which can be immensely upsetting and isolating. It doesn’t have to be that way through and if you are willing to put in the time and the effort, your brain can be strengthened and kept young just like a muscle. Here we will look at how you can keep your brain sharper and prevent some of that age related cognitive decline.

Exercise

Exercising is an important way to keep your body strong and healthy as you get older, but it has other benefits besides the obvious. One of the most useful of these is the way it can help to strengthen your brain – and if you’ve ever struggled with short-term memory loss as you’ve gotten older, it may interest you to know that memory improvement is one of the main effects of starting a new exercise regime and particularly one involving lots of cardio.

Use

The saying ‘use it or lose it’ is definitely one that applies here and using our brain regularly in creative ways is one of the very best ways you can avoid letting it start to deteriorate. The best uses are ones that involve forward planning and holding numbers, so if games like chess or even computer games are ideal. These work the ‘fluid intelligence’ by training working memory. Learning new tasks is also important, as this helps to encourage ‘brain plasticity’ to keep the brain limber and ensure you can teach old dog’s new tricks. That said though, anything will help – even just reading occasionally.

Diet

The right diet can do wonders for looking after your brain and helping to prevent the onset of various neurological diseases or general deterioration. Particularly useful are fatty acids such as omega 3 which you can get from fish and supplements, vitamins such as B9 (also known as folic acid) which can be found in fruits and veg and amino acids (proteins) which you can get from meat or from supplementation.

Lifestyle

Similarly, your lifestyle can also have an impact on your mental health. Things like your sleep regime and fresh air can affect your brain, while alcohol consumption can also have a big impact. Live in a manner that is conducive to good brain health, and you will get more benefit from the better diet and other changes.

Staying Active

Old age shouldn’t look like a training program filled with brain tasks, gym sessions and supplements though, better is to just lead a lifestyle that will keep you active and engaged. For instance, you can benefit from staying at work or from starting new hobbies. As long as you keep challenging yourself and pushing yourself, your brain won’t start to go to waste.

Decoding Women Body Language > Dating Tips

There is an overgeneralization these days that the actions of the women are difficult to understand. However, reading the women body language is definitely easy with our 5 easy tips.

1. Physical contact

Is she touching your arm in any manner? This is always good sign. This indicates that she is interested in you and she is taking any opportunity she can to be able to have physical contact with you. Unless she is striking you and asking you to leave her alone, then it means exactly what she is saying! That is one signal that means you should just do what she says because she is not interested.

2. Her lips

Is she biting her lips? It’s alright. She may be nervous, and it may be a habit of hers when she is nervous. Or she may be subtly flirting with you! If she wets her lips often, it may be a desire for you to pay attention to her lips! So she is definitely interested!

3. Her eyes

If she maintains eye contact with you, this is a good sign!  This indicates that she is interested in what you have to say and definitely interested in you. Observe her pupils too. If they are dilated, it may be a sign that she is interested in you. Although, do be aware that other factors can influence the dilation of the pupils such as brightness of the room and alcohol!

4. Her hands and arms

Is she sitting back with her arms crossed together? She may be closed and not receptive towards you. It may be from a habit but more often than not it indicates that she is not interested. So take a step back and continue talking, if she seems uninterested in what you have to say. Just step out. Plenty of other fishes in the sea!

5.Her fingers

Is she playing with her hair or is she running her fingers through her hair? She may be seeking your attention with all these little acts of preening of hers. If she is fidgeting around, it may be a sign of discomfort or nervousness. So, try being kind to her and she will receive you more warmly for trying to calm her down.

So, men, take heart. Take note of the body language tips and flirt your way to success!

How to Keep Your Hands and Nails Looking Young > Anti-Aging

Our hands are always on display, and we often do not realize that they should be an integral part of our beauty routine or grooming regimen. If you forget them, they can end up ‘giving the game away’ when it comes to your true age or even make you look older than you are. You can look youthful, trim and healthy but if your hands look like they belong to the Wicked Witch of the West (or Gandalf) then you isn’t fooling anyone!

The ideal is to inherit attractive hands with deep, almond-shaped nails from your parents that never age; but for those of us who missed out, we can still achieve an attractive effect with effort and imagination.  Health affects fingernails, just as it does other parts of the body. If you see deep furrows across the nails, they are often caused by poor nutrition. Poor circulation, too, from diabetes or heart problems, slows down fingernail growth, producing rougher, thicker, yellow-tinted nails. However, natural changes due to aging, and damage caused by household cleansers and detergents are the most common cause of dry, brittle nails.

After age 30, nails grow more slowly, and the blood supply to the area under the cuticle where they form, called the nail matrix, decreases. As a result, the matrix gets fewer nutrients, so they become brittle. Using nail enamel to harden and strengthen nails is counter-productive, since it makes them inflexible and prone to chipping and breaking. It also seals moisture out of nails when they are immersed in water. When you soak your nails, they can absorb three times their water content. Nail polish removers, like acetone, are also bad because they strip away the intercellular adhesives that hold nails together.

If you want to increase the strength and flexibility of your nails and the youthful appearance of your hands at any age, try these tips:

1) A good diet is important for healthy nails. It should include turkey which is high in protein and benefits the skin and hair as well as the nails thanks to its iron content and potassium. It has less fat than chicken and also contains potassium. Moreover, all the diet tips that keep the skin on your face young will work for your hands too. Antioxidants are key!

2) Always wear rubber gloves with cotton lining when using household cleansers and detergents.

3) Women: only use nail polish on special occasions. Polish removers are very harsh, so it is better to try to patch small chips when you do use nail enamel rather than removing all the polish too often. Buff nails with olive oil instead of painting them. They will shine and grow strong.

4) When you take a bath, soak your nails and then apply a moisturizer to the skin around the nails, as well as to your whole hand.

5) Wear warm gloves in Winter. The body conserves heat by reducing circulation to the extremities, including the nail matrix.

6) Moisturize! Whether you’re a man or a woman, moisturizing your hands will help to prevent cracking and blistering now and it will help to protect your skin cells from aging keeping your hands looking youthful as you reach your twilight years. You can even look for a product with a little sunblock to prevent skin from damaging the hands.

Effective and Ineffective Ways to Look Younger > Anti-Aging

Unless you are literally still a child, everyone wants to look younger. As we get older, we unfortunately are dealt the double blow of both visibly ageing and losing our looks, as well as gradually running out of time to complete the things we want to do and live the life we always dreamed of living.

This can all be quite painful, and unfortunately there is no way to actually ‘stop’ the hands of time from ticking. However, what you can do is to ensure that you don’t age so obviously and minimize the visible physical effects of ageing. Of course, as in the story of Faust, none of these is perfect and each has its own drawbacks. Here we will look at a few of the different methods and what you can expect…

How to Look Younger – Pros and Cons

Skin Creams: Skin creams are worshipped by many hopefuls as a potential elixir of youth that can help them to prevent wrinkles, sunspots and other unfortunate skin damage that comes with age. It’s none-invasive and it’s not a method anyone is likely to feel bad or self-conscious about. The downsides however are that a) it’s quite expensive over a period of time, and b) it’s not going to make a huge amount of difference. Many skin creams and anti-ageing creams are sadly complete scams, but even the very best ones have only been found to be around 10% effective.

Botox: Botox involves an injection that can paralyze the muscles in the face thereby resulting in a fixed expression. This then prevents the skin from rolling and wrinkling when you smile or pull any other more contorted expression which of course prevents lines. Because it’s temporary you won’t be stuck with anything that you don’t turn out to like either. But the downside is unfortunately that it can sometimes look a little odd if it isn’t done well due to the loss of ability to smile as broadly.

Makeup: There’s a lot you can do with makeup. Of course, you can fill in deep lines with foundation, but make sure that it is a sheer foundation and not prudery – or it can end up building up in the cracks and making you look older. Even just adding a little tan to the skin can help or drawing the eye to other features with lipstick or eye shadow. As you age, your cheekbones can actually look more defined, and this is also good to draw attention to. Just note that you may risk looking like you’re trying too hard to look young if you aren’t subtle with it.

Supplements and Diet: There are various supplements that claim to prevent and fight ageing. Of course, if you’re trying to look younger then you want the latter specifically – antioxidants might help prevent you getting extra wrinkles, but they won’t get rid of the ones you have. What might have more of a positive effect is to eat your protein, to get lots of vitamins and minerals, and to try resveratrol. Though don’t expect a miracle transformation unless your diet is currently in tatters and responsible for your skin problems. Likewise, be very wary of products that seem to offer a miracle. Remember the old adage: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn’t!

Plastic Surgery: Plastic surgery is the most invasive choice for turning back the clock, but it is also the strategy most likely to have permanent and very definite results. If you want to be sure that you will look different tomorrow, then there are various different surgical techniques available from laser treatments to lifts. These vary in results as well as in invasiveness and discomfort. Consider carefully if you want to go ahead and the various options available to you, and make sure to see a consultant as well before making any final decisions.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Explained > Senior Living

Our skin is one of the most obvious indicators of our age, and if you ask someone to predict how old you are it’s your skin that they’ll look to to make their estimate. For this reason, anti-aging skin care is one of the surest ways to look younger and healthier to make sure that there are no awkward moments when someone mistakes your sister for your daughter or your granddad for your brother…

Using the correct techniques, it’s possible to cut up to 25 years off your appearance, maybe more, and not only look better but feel better too.

Read on and let’s enlighten you…

Diet

The first facet of anti-aging skin care is our diet, and the more healthily we eat, the smoother and healthier our skin will be. This stands to reason, when you consider that it’s our food that provides our body with the building blocks required to make look after our skin and every other tissue and muscle in the body. You literally are what you eat, and if you want healthy skin you need a healthy diet.

When thinking specifically about anti-aging skin care, there are three main things we need in our diet – antioxidants, vitamins and moisture. First of all, the anti-oxidants, found in foods such as citrus fruits and fish, will help protect our skin cells (and every other cell) from oxidization and attack from free radicals. This will mean that the skin cells come under less fire and so appear healthier. At the same time this will help protect the skin and other cells against cancer by lowering the chance of the DNA behind the cell walls being damaged or mutated.

Vitamins meanwhile, particularly vitamin A and E, are used in rebuilding the skin and are a great way to encourage the body to heal both scars and wrinkles.

Essential fatty acids meanwhile will provide your skin with oil to keep it subtle and prevent it becoming dry and flaky. Omega 3 fatty acid will act as both as an anti-inflammatory agent and a source of antioxidants, while a multivitamin tablet will provide the rest.

Lifestyle

Anti-aging skin care is also about lifestyle, and how we treat our bodies will be reflected in the appearance of our skin. While soaking up the sun will help us to look bronzed and healthy in the short run, over time it will lead to damaged skin cells which will create more wrinkles in our old age. Similarly, it’s important that we make sure we get lots of sleep.

One of the reasons for this is that our sleep is when our body repairs damage done to our bodies throughout the day and so can rejuvenate our skin that way. One of the ways in which this works is through the release of growth hormone, or HGH, which is a hormone that encourages anabolism in the body making it repair wounds, rebuild muscle, replace damaged cells and encourage growth in the muscles and bones (though the bones stop growing after puberty when the ‘growth plates’ will seal off). As well as sleep, another way to encourage the natural production of growth hormone (synthetic growth hormone is used a lot by bodybuilders and celebrities, but is unfortunately illegal in most states and countries and very expensive in those that it is not) is to exercise and to take hot showers, both of which will trigger an anabolic cycle.

Skin Care Products

Then the most obvious aspect of anti-aging skin care – the use of anti-aging cream and products. These will work in multiple ways, both protecting your skin from outside attack from UV rays and environmental factors, and providing your skin with important nutrients.

You should make sure that you follow a routine and apply your face creams in the morning and in the night before bed. This routine should begin with an exfoliating cream or face wash which will remove dead skin cells (that can otherwise interfere with the mechanisms of the moisturizing creams and nutrients). This also makes you look younger by evening out your skin tone.

After this you should then use a protective cream such as Protect and Perfect from No 7, which will protect your skin from UV rays. Finally, a rejuvenating moisturizer should be applied which should contain vitamins A and E – both of which we have already seen are vital in skin
