Collecting Bug Out Bag Essentials > Survival & Preppers

When you want to be prepared for an emergency, it’s important to collect bug out bag essentials to keep you safe during an evacuation. A bug out bag is simply a kit that can help you survive for about three days during a disaster.

There are many essential items that you’ll need to put together to create a functional bug out bag. First, you’ll want to have a heavy duty backpack. The best backpacks for bug out bags have metal frames to help the weight be distributed evenly on your body.

This makes it easier for you to carry your kit for long distances if required. These backpacks also have a lot of space where you can store items that you need to have with you in an emergency.

Another essential item includes a first aid kit. You’ll need to have a kit that includes bandages, scissors, external medications, instant cold packs, fever reducers, stomach medicine and antiseptic. You’ll also need to include a three day supply of any prescription medicines you take.

If you have a family with children, you’ll want to have children’s formulas as well. You don’t want your first aid kit to take up all the room in your pack, so make sure you have the essentials in a compact form. You should also include toiletries and hygiene items.

Food is another essential item for your bug out bag. You’ll need a three day supply of food that you can eat without cooking. You may want to add gel fuel for warming up foods such as soups, but that’s not necessary.

Foods good for bug out bags include protein bars, trail mix, Meals Ready to Eat, canned meats, and soups. You may also want to have high sugar items such as hard candies to help you get quick energy. If you have canned foods, make sure you have a manual can opener in your pack.

In addition to food, it’s important to have a three day supply of water. In general you’ll need 4 liters of water per person for three days. It’s best to keep it in smaller containers to distribute the weight.

You’ll also need clothing and bedding to stay warm and dry. It’s a good idea to have a plastic sheet or tarp to protect you from moisture. It’s also a good idea to have items such as a tent or tarp to create shelter if needed.

It’s a good idea to have equipment such as an emergency radio, knife, rope, duct tape, axe, shovel, and pen and paper. These items can be invaluable during a disaster.

Finally, you should make sure you have some cash and copies of important personal documents such as IDs, car titles, home deeds, wills, marriage certificates, and birth certificates. You’ll want to keep documents in a waterproof container to keep them safe from harm.

When you have bug out bag essentials in your home, you can rest assured you’ll be ready for an emergency that requires you to leave your home.

Cold Weather DIY Heat and Light Sources > Survival & Prepper

Dual function is something you’ll want to consider as part of your emergency preparation plan. While many people are fully prepared in the event of a cold weather situation and they need heat and light, it can be easy to get caught off-guard.

You might be in a situation where you need heat and light but you don’t have the supplies and you can’t get out to get them. If that’s the case, there are still ways that you can use what you have at home to get through the event until life returns to normal.

If you try to burn your flashlight at night in order to have light in your home, there’s the risk that the batteries might not last as long as you need them to if you don’t have solar power or rechargeable batteries.

You can turn to your pantry to find a solution. One way to have both a heat and a light source is by using your container of Crisco. You can use the shortening to quickly make a candle.

You can place a candle wick in the center of the Crisco if you have one in your supply closet. If you don’t, you can still make this type of candle without a wick. You can use something like twine or string as the wick.

You can also use a small piece of tightly rolled paper towel or even a toothpick as a wick. Once you light it, the wick will burn the Crisco for days on end, giving you both light and heat.

Another option that you can use is something that you probably already have plenty of in your home. You can use Crayola crayons to make candles that will give off both heat and light.

What you have to keep in mind when using these is that when used individually, the crayons tend to burn out within about 15 minutes. But if you mix them with regular wax, it extends the burning life.

You can heat the bottom of the crayon with a flame and the hot wax on the bottom can then be used to stick the crayon in an upright position. Hold a flame over the top of the crayon until it lights, and it’ll burn steadily once it’s lit.

Terra cotta planter heaters – also known as flower pot heaters – are another option to give you both a heat and a light source. You’ll need something like tea light candles. These are inexpensive to purchase.

You can usually find a 100 of them by the bag for less than $5. Place these tea lights on a clay planter base. Secure the planter upside down over the tea lights. Don’t fully cover the lights with the planter.

You want it on a raised platform so you can see the candles. You can create this raised platform by using rocks, bricks or something else that won’t burn. This creates a heater effect.

While it won’t make the room you use it in comfortable enough to wear short sleeves in the cold, it’ll keep the worst of the cold temperature at bay. If the power grid ever goes down and leaves you freezing, you’ll be happy to have a few methods to warm yourself and your food and drinks up.

Plum-Good Coffee Cake > Easy Bake Desert Recipe

Even if you’ve never baked before, the rewards of home baking are within your reach. Many recipes for baked goods aren’t at all difficult. Plum-Good Coffee Cake is a prime example. The coffee cake is a good way to add more fruit servings to your diet for breakfast, brunch or a late-night snack and, best of all, it’s easy to make.

For success, start by gathering all the ingredients and equipment. Let the butter sit at room temperature until it’s soft. This makes it easier to beat the butter with the sugar so they take in air and form a fluffy, creamy mixture. Adding cold eggs to the creamed butter and sugar could harden the butter again and make the batter curdle. To prevent this, take the eggs out of the refrigerator 20 to 30 minutes before you use them or put them in a bowl of warm water while you’re assembling the other ingredients.

Low speed on the mixer helps keep the flour mixture from flying in the air. Because overbeating the flour could toughen your cake, beat just until the batter is smooth. Use a rubber scraper or spoon to add half of the fruit by hand. Be gentle to avoid crushing the plums.

In about half an hour from the time you pop the pan into the oven, you’ll have a cake you can proudly serve to family and friends. Nobody has to know how simple it was to bake!

Plum-Good Coffee Cake

1 (9-inch) cake or 8 servings

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter,

softened

2/3 cup sugar

4 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon pumpkin pie

spice

1 1/2 cups diced fresh plums

(about 8 oz.)

Confectioners’ sugar,

optional

In small mixing bowl at medium speed, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Stir together flour, baking powder and spice. Add flour mixture to egg mixture. Beat at low speed until smooth. Fold in 3/4 cup of the plums. Pour into lightly greased 9-inch round cake pan or quiche pan. Top with remaining plums.

Bake in preheated 375 F oven until lightly browned and top springs back when lightly touched with finger, about 30 to 35 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Dust with confectioners’ sugar, if desired. Cut into wedges. Serve warm or cool.

Use Past Mistakes to Make a New Success Mindset > Personal Success

Every single decisions matters. Every choice you have made in your life has led you to the point you’re at now.
And when I say that, you are probably thinking of all those big choices you made. The choice to go into a certain career for instance, the choice to move to a certain part of town and the choice to marry a certain person. Change any of those pivotal moments and everything would be different.

But what about those smaller choices? And what about the choices you make all the time, simply through inaction. When you choose not to look for other work, when you choose not to challenge the system.

And when you choose to ignore the nagging voice inside that is telling you: there’s more to life than this.
It’s scary stuff because it means that no moment in your life is inconsequential. But it’s also incredibly liberating – right now, you have a million choices open to you and you can take any of them. But how to know what to do?

Make a Map of Failure

If there’s anything you’re unhappy with in your life, then chances are that you got there by making certain choices and decisions. These are your failures and you are now bearing those scars in your daily life.

Many of us will accept our lot in life and accept these mistakes and thus continue to live a life less satisfying.
But what if we change this approach? What if instead, we take those things we’re unhappy with and we vow to learn from them – to not make those mistakes again.

Did you get to the point of being unhappy in your work by not speaking up and going after a raise? By not looking for work elsewhere? By not taking the chance to go after your dream?

Are you unhappy with your financial situation because you chose not to budget? Or because you chose to take out a loan for something you didn’t need – something that didn’t help you on your path to success? Don’t feel bad about these mistakes – just recognize them for what they are. And knowing that, use the opportunity to head out there and really make a difference – to embrace the life that you want.

Next time the opportunity comes up – take it. And don’t fail to speak up: start telling people what you want. Want to fix your finances? Come up with a budget and stick to it. It’s not too late, if you are able to learn from those mistakes!

Why Do Most People Refuse to Take Ownership of Their Power Over Their Lives? > Self Help

The title of this blog post is sure to offend a lot of people. Somebody who is living in a slum or who was caught up in an abusive relationship would be very incredulous. In fact, a lot of them would be downright insulted.

They could say, “How dare you imply that I somehow own this life, that I chose this life? I didn’t choose to get slapped around. I didn’t choose to get born to a drug-addicted mother. I didn’t choose to live in a slum. How dare you! I’m a victim here. I am life’s victim. This is why I make bad choice. This is why my health is this way. This is why I’m surrounded by bad people. How dare you! Nobody wants to choose this. Get off your high horse. Who do you think you are?” and on and on it goes.

However, here’s the problem. When that is your default response to any kind of uplifting and empowering message regarding your ownership of your life and your destiny through your choices, what do you end up achieving?

That’s right. You end up stuck. You end up making the same kind of decisions over and over again because at the back of your head, change is not possible. It’s not possible because you don’t own you’re life. You’re just a piece of plastic drifting on this storm-tossed ocean called “your life.”

You were just born into it. You are at the mercy of people and situations beyond your control. Your life is not one of your making. Your decisions don’t count for much regardless of how much you aspire for the better things in life. Nothing will seem to happen because one disappointment leads to another. Pretty discouraging, right?

In fact, this is pretty downright depressing.

Unfortunately, this is the reality people choose because they refuse to take ownership of their power over their lives. Your life, whether you admit it or not and whether you accept it or not, is the result of your choices.

Don’t get me wrong. If you were born to a drug-addicted mother, you obviously did not have a choice about that. You obviously did not have a choice when your father abandoned your family or slapped you around when you were a little kid. You obviously didn’t choose to get beaten up by the schoolyard bully over and over again.

All these traumas are not consciously chosen by people. Let’s get that out of the way. What you can choose is your response to those. When you become an adult or when you have the capacity, you can make other decisions.

You don’t have to stay there. You can work. You can take a low-paying job and scale up from there. You can choose to get educated. You can choose to show up in school on time, do the necessary work, aim to get good grades, hang out with the right people, and then move on.

I’m not saying it’s easy but the decisions to a better life are there. You just have to follow those decisions. There’s always a decision to be somewhere and that’s why our lives are a reflection of our decisions. Our decisions, on the other hand, are reflections of our mindset.

If you are sick and tired of feeling like you’re life’s victim, stop being a victim by saying, “I am responsible for how I respond to life. I’m going to start making different decisions. I’m going to stick to those decisions. I’m going to commit myself to a different outcome.”

None of this is easy especially if you’re born with very little advantages and resources but just as many people who have lifted themselves up from the worst form of abuse and poverty and turned themselves into billionaires and role models, you can do the same and it all begins with a simple revolution. It all begins with taking ownership of your complete being. This doesn’t just include your conscious mind. This also includes every aspect of your mind including your subconscious. You owe it to yourself. In life, there are only two types of people: victims or victors. Which one are you? Which one do you choose to be?

How to Rein in a Hyperactive Mind for Increased Success > Personal Productivity

Having a hyperactive mind can make you extremely productive. But it can also overwhelm you because your mind is constantly running full speed ahead. You can get an idea and immediately another one will pop in.

Or you can get creative and it seems like your creativity is all over the place. While this might be who you are, it can make it difficult for you to be able to achieve your goals. You must learn how to rein in your mind in order to find success.

People who have hyperactive minds are usually extremely intelligent as well as creative, but they struggle because they find it hard to focus. However, learning how to focus is one of the steps you need to learn in order to achieve your goals.

You learn how to focus by giving all your attention to one part of the project, not the project as a whole. You only keep your attention on that part, and you remain focused for either a set amount of time or until that part is complete.

You need to shut out all distractions. Don’t allow interruptions that would break your focus. What this does is it helps the mind to regain control over the overload. If a distraction crops up, don’t give in to it and if you do, pause and refocus back on the task at hand.

When you have a creative idea or project to work on, break it down according to all the steps or parts that make up the project. This helps to automatically calm a hyperactive mind because someone who has this tends to leap into uncontrolled thoughts when faced with the entirety of a matter.

Breaking an idea or project down into small steps gives the brain a roadmap and shows it that first, you do this, second comes this step, third is this part and so on. Not only will this help you focus but it also allows you to achieve what you set out to do.

Look only at the problem, idea or plan that’s in front of you. When your thoughts start racing and information is pouring in or you’re jumping from idea to idea, disrupt your thoughts.

You can just pause and tell yourself that it’s not time to think about all those things yet. It can be helpful to take the information in your mind and write them down. By writing them down, you get them out of your head.

Your mind can then relax because it’s not trying to hold onto that information while more information is coming in. Have a set time that you allow your mind to run free. Use a timer and set it for five or ten minutes.

Then tell yourself that your time is up and it’s back to work. You can also pause and take a few minutes to meditate or to engage in mindfulness. This can help you remember to remain present.

You can train your mind to break free from the hyperactive mode to focus on your overall plan by consistently bringing your thoughts back into focus. It takes practice, but it can be done.

5 Different Ways Gratitude can Improve Your Quality of Life > Self Help

You probably know of other methods that can help you improve your quality of life. But you know what ties most of these other methods together? Gratitude.

Saying “thank you” might sound simple enough, but the sad truth is that not a lot of people practice it in real life. So, here are 5 ways gratitude can have a positive impact on your quality of life.

  1. Gratitude makes you happier

When you remember everything you currently have in your life, it makes you feel good. No matter how little or how abundant your material or non-material wealth is, don’t take anything for granted. Be thankful for what you have, there are others out there who aren’t as lucky as you!

  1. Gratitude makes you more likable

Saying thanks to people who make your life easier by way of a product or service will help boost that person’s morale. They’ll feel appreciated, and they’ll be bound to try and do their best to be better at their jobs. When people like and appreciate you, they tend to be more trusting and open which results in better relationships with everyone!

  1. Gratitude makes you less self-centered

You probably dislike self-centered people. These are people who think of nothing but themselves and feel entitled to everything they can get their hands on. They have no regard for others, even if they’re stepping on someone’s toes. When you practice gratitude, you become aware of the people around you and in effect, you become more accepting towards others.

  1. Gratitude makes you less envious

Envy is a double-bladed sword. It can be good or bad depending on how much envy you’ve got running in your system. It’s good if you can use it to do productive things, like motivating you to try and do something better with your life. But it’s bad if you let it take control – feelings of insecurity and inferiority can literally destroy your happiness. So, practice gratitude and be happy for those who are more successful than you.

  1. Gratitude makes you more optimistic

Without feelings of envy, you can clearly see the path you need to take, so you too can succeed. When you make gratitude a habit, you see the silver lining in everything. It makes you more optimistic and gives you a more positive outlook in life!

Camping Out Indoors to Stay Warm During a Winter Power Outage > Survival and Prepper

During a winter power outage, you need the right equipment in order to stay warm inside your home. When it comes to your ability to do that, camping gear is one of the best choices you can make for your emergency preparation supply.

Camping gear is designed for the elements and can not only keep you warm, but comfortable as well. You don’t have to be outside in order to use these resources.
You can pitch a tent in any room in your home.

By setting up a tent, you’re creating a smaller, enclosed space. Doing this helps you to have a smaller area to heat. Not only that, but body heat can naturally warm up the space inside the tent.

To further insulate this area, you can set up a tent within a tent. If you have large tent, set it up first, then set up the smaller tent inside of it. The heat from your body can remain in the space between the two tents, which means you’ll preserve more heat.

When you put sleeping bags inside the tent, you’ll be even more protected from the cold and have a comfortable place to wait out the power outage. Besides having a tent and sleeping bags to help keep you warm, you’ll also want to have alternative cooking options for when the power goes out.

You’ll want to look for appliances that are safe to use indoors. If you have a fireplace, you can cook several different types of food items using this. You can also boil water or make hot beverages.

What you would need is a grate or a cooking rack that sits above the flames. You can use camping cookpots to cook over an open flame. You can also use cast iron frying pans and make everything from eggs to pancakes to meat, vegetables and one dish casserole meals.

You can also use a Dutch oven with your fireplace. Just like you do with roasting marshmallows, you can also cook over the fire using skewers with a variety of foods.
If you don’t have a fireplace, you can use canned cooking fuel or, you can use a camping stove that relies on cooking fuel.

Just make sure that you choose the models that are safe to use for indoor cooking.
Lighting is something else you’re going to want to have on hand. Otherwise, once it gets dark, you won’t be able to do anything other than go to sleep.

You can use lights that need batteries such as flashlights and battery powered light bulbs. There are also touch lights that are flat and square. You can place these on a surface, sit a water bottle on top of them and create a lot of light.

Solar powered lamps are a good idea to have on hand during a power outage. You can also use hurricane lanterns, glow sticks and candles. If you have pets or young children in the home, you would need to be careful with the open flames.

Avoiding Carbon Monoxide Poisoning with Safe Heat During Winter Weather > Survival & Prepper

When you’re in the middle of a winter weather crisis, and you don’t have any heat, you must find a way to produce that heat in order to get warm. It’s not safe to just use any type of heating that you find, because many of them come with dangerous side effects that can be harmful or fatal.

One of the side effects of using the wrong kind of heating is carbon monoxide poisoning. This is something that occurs when, instead of carrying oxygen throughout your body, your cells are filled with carbon monoxide.

When you breathe in carbon monoxide, you may not even be aware of it because it’s odorless. You can get symptoms from experiencing it, though. You may get a headache or start to feel dizzy.

Some people get confused or end up vomiting. This type of poisoning can make you feel like you have the flu. There can be multiple things that cause carbon monoxide poisoning, but it happens to you when you inhale fumes from these devices.

Certain household appliances can cause a buildup of carbon monoxide in your home – things such as a furnace or a fireplace – even if it’s a wood burning fireplace. Your home can have a buildup of this gas from a gas stove or from a water heater.

You can also experience carbon monoxide poisoning from your vehicle. The main reason it happens is due to poor or no ventilation of an appliance or heating device. This is especially true when you’re trying to heat your home during a cold weather event.

When the electricity goes out and it gets cold inside, some people think it’s okay to bring their charcoal grill inside to heat the house. But a charcoal grill releases carbon monoxide.

One way to tell if something’s wrong is to look at the flame of whatever type of heating device you’re using. With natural gas devices, the color of the flame should be blue and not yellow or orange.

But if you’re burning fuel in a portable heating device, the flame should be yellow or orange. Always look at the device ratings. Most will have a label indicating whether or not they’re safe to use indoors and if there are any ventilation needs.

Don’t use any device that’s not rated for indoor use. It’s safe to use indoor propane appliances, alcohol heaters, solar powered heaters and vent-free heaters. You can use a wood stove or gas fireplace if either has been properly ventilated.

Because you can’t see it or smell it, you have no way to know if you’re at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. This is why you need to have a CO detector in your home. You should have one of these alarms on each floor of your home. These devices can sense carbon monoxide before the gas makes you ill – or worse.

Use Brain Training Exercises to Increase Your Focus > Personal Productivity

Many people don’t realize that one of the most important parts of your body that needs strength-training is your brain. Just like how you strengthen your arms by lifting weights, you have to do the same with your brain.

If you don’t, you can end up having poor focus and concentration. This can make your mind wander consistently throughout the day, and the end result is that you suddenly realize you haven’t accomplished everything you needed to do.

Several studies have been conducted to prove that brain training exercises and games can increase your focus and strengthen your cognitive functions. These cognitive functions in the brain are what allow you to receive, store, develop, and remember information.

Without strengthening these functions, you can have trouble focusing and concentrating because your information feels scattered rather than organized. One study in Saudi Arabia followed fifty-one healthy subjects for months while they used brain training exercises.

At the end of the study, it was found that several of the test subjects showed improvement in their cognitive functions, especially with their attention span. This means the people who used brain training exercises were able to keep attention and focus on things longer than before they’d practiced the exercises.

One of the most important things you need to train your brain to do is focus. It’s natural to daydream when you’re in an office or doing repetitive work. But you can train your brain to make focusing a habit as well.

When you don’t train your brain to focus on your work, then you can end up with the problem of not getting your to-do lists finished which means you could miss work deadlines.

Some people who don’t train their brains with exercises might have a problem with procrastination. There are several brain training exercises you can use to increase your focus so that this isn’t an issue for you.

However, remember to start at a low level. Just like how you wouldn’t start exercising by bench-pressing three hundred pounds or running five miles, you have to stretch your brain first before it can start focusing properly.

A great thing about brain training techniques is that you can do them anywhere. For example, there are several apps, including the highly popular Luminosity, that allows you to do brain training exercises and games on the go.

By training your brain every day, you’re building it up to handle more. This will help in all areas of life, but especially with work and creativity. When you have a busy day ahead, it can be difficult to remember everything that needs to be done.

But if your mind is already prepared from brain training exercises, you’ll find it easier to remember the tasks you need to get done, and by improving your focus, you’ll boost your productivity.
