What is Intelligence? The Nature of Genius and How to Obtain It > Mental Wellness

When many of us think about improving brain health, what we are really interested in is boosting our intelligence. If we become more intelligent, then we can solve problems, work more efficiently and generally become more adept at pretty much any kind of challenge.

But increasing intelligence is no simple feat. And this is particularly true when you consider that intelligence is actually a very abstract concept. What even is intelligence? Is intelligence actually just ‘one thing’ or is it multiple ‘things’? Let’s take a closer look…

A Modular Approach to Intelligence

If you take the stance that intelligence is in fact ‘lots of things’, then that would mean you took a ‘modular’ approach to it.

In other words, this means that you view intelligence not as a single thing but rather as many separate things, independent of one another. This seems to make sense when you consider that someone can be fantastic verbally but not so good at math. Or when you think that some people have a lot of knowledge (called ‘crystalized intelligence’) whereas others are better at abstract puzzles (‘fluid intelligence’).

Psychologist Howard Gardner subscribed to this view and described us as having ‘multiple intelligences’. It may even be that there are some negative correlations between types of intelligence – in other words, being smarter in one domain might actually make you less smart in another!

Overall Smarts

But this is a somewhat frustrating answer because it suggests that there may be no singular way to become more intelligent. One approach then might be to prize one form of intelligence over the others – what cognitive ability will bring you the best results across the board? If you were to try and mimic the brain of Einstein, then you might focus on your special reasoning. Einstein actually had particularly large inferior parietal lobes, which could have meant he had better spatial intelligence – which is reinforced with his explanations of how he came up with ideas.

Brain Connectivity

But Einstein also had another interesting feature in his brain. He had a particularly thick ‘corpus callosum’, which would have meant that his left and right hemispheres were better at communicating with one another. Many psychologists have theorized that the best way to see overall global intelligence is to increase connectivity between different brain regions – that this allows you to come up with more novel ideas and to manipulate information in different ways.

Now the question becomes: how do you get a big parietal lobe? How do you increase your connectivity?

And the answer is probably a combination of the correct training and learning (particularly in younger age), along with a more plastic brain. Brain plasticity is the ability we have to adapt our brains to any given situation like a muscle and this could be what allows us to quickly learn a new task and to grow the specific brain regions and connections that we need at any given time! The good news? It is possible to train brain plasticity!

When you’re working on a project, distraction can sometimes be a problem. For some people, it can be a pattern. You might find that you get distracted and seem to lose focus during specific points in a project.

You reach the halfway point and suddenly feel bored like you couldn’t possibly come up with anything else to do, write or say. Progress comes to a halt. Or, it could be that you get almost to the end of the project and then you start worrying.

You worry whether it’s good enough and whether you did everything right. You wonder if you missed a step or what you could do in order to make it better. Whatever runs through your mind, the result is the same.

You’re distracted and the project isn’t finished. To overcome this, you have to learn to break the pattern and it is possible. First, you need to figure out if the problem is what’s going on around you or within you.

If you’re having trouble completing a project because you always get distracted, you have to figure out where the distraction is coming from. If it’s within yourself, it could be anxiety or fear of failure or even fear of success that makes you drag your feet.

You would address these issues by acknowledging the struggle. When you name and confront something, you can deal with it. Make sure you’re not practicing negative self-talk about the project like you’ll never get this finished, you’re not good enough to get it done, etc.

Focus on the success you’ve already had rather than looking at what you haven’t accomplished. This will give you a sense of empowerment that stops internal distractions.

If the distraction is around you rather than within you, then you have to stop whatever is affecting you because it’s related to cause and effect. The cause brings about the effect it has on your productivity.

Usually, these kinds of distractions are things like noise or other people. It can sometimes be that you don’t have the knowledge that you need to feel confident in the project.

When distractions are external, you can stop or prevent them. Use earbuds to block out the noise – pr a white noise machine. Find a people-free area to work in. If this is an office, put up a do not disturb sign and lock the door.

When the issue is a lack of knowledge, study what you need to know prior to beginning the project. Plan your project. Having a list to follow can help keep you on track. Set specific goals and deadlines for accomplishing those goals.

Make your work area distraction free. No cell phones and no internet if you can do the project without it. If you know that you get distracted at a certain point regardless of what you do, set that time as your scheduled break. Then when the break is over, get back to work.

Lemon Dill Sauce
1/4 cup nonfat chicken broth
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1/4 teaspoon dried dill

Directions
1. In large bowl, combine tuna, breadcrumbs, green onion, egg, milk, and lemon peel.
2. With lightly floured hands, form mixture into patties.
3. Spray a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray and heat over medium heat.
4. Cook patties, until golden brown on both sides, about 3 minutes per side.

Sauce 
Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan and heat over medium heat until warm.

Add a small amount of flour and mix with a whisk to thicken sauce.

Spoon sauce over tuna patties and serve.

Stir-Fry Shrimp Scramble

4 to 6 servings

1 tablespoon cooking oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

4 ounces medium to large fresh or frozen raw shrimp

1 can (8 oz.) sliced water chestnuts, drained

1/4 cup chopped green onions with tops

6 eggs

1/2 teaspoon salt, optional

Green onion fan, optional

In 10-inch omelet pan or skillet over medium-high heat, cook garlic and ginger in hot oil until garlic is lightly browned, about 1 to 2 minutes. Add pea pods, shrimp, water chestnuts and onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, until shrimp turns pink, about 5 to 6 minutes. Beat together eggs and salt, if desired, until blended. Pour over vegetables and shrimp. With pancake turner, gently lift and turn mixture until eggs are thickened and no visible liquid egg remains. Garnish with onion fan, if desired.

Nutrition information per serving of 1/6 recipe using corn oil and fresh shrimp without optional salt and onion garnish: 145 calories, 8 gm total fat, 241 mg cholesterol, 96 mg sodium, 186 mg potassium, 7 gm carbohydrate, 12 gm protein and 10% or more of the RDI for vitamins B12 and C, riboflavin, iron, phosphorus.
