When your personal and professional lives are struggling to get what they need from you, it can cause a flood of outside judgment on you. Initially, you just sense the uneasy feeling of not having everything under control.

You know that your sleep schedule is off. The lack of energy you experience, plus the focus to get everything done on your to do list causes stress and you know you’re letting yourself and your loved ones down.

But eventually, it’s not just you that it’s affecting. You will begin to see cracks in your relationships with your family and friends as well as your colleagues, customers and clients.

It’s then that you know something must be done about it. If you let it go unattended, you will have to suffer the consequences of your inability to manage your time properly. Most of getting your personal and professional lives in sync is nothing more than a time management issue, paired with disorganized priorities.

You have to know what comes first in your day, and create a schedule that allows you to get your most important tasks completed. That’s not always work related, by the way. If you have a commitment to go to your child’s school play, then that must be prioritized just as much as the completion of a project is.

Often times, you won’t receive a large intervention at the first sign of a struggle between your personal and professional life. People may not say anything to you at all in the beginning.

They simply feel the disappointment stemming from your disorganization and quietly hope that you’ll get it back on track. Later, they may feel the need to speak up. This can come in the form of subtle comments or even showing care and concern.

They may ask if you are okay. They may suggest you do something different. While these positive and caring moments are not mean in any way, underneath it all, the person discussing this with you may be disappointed.

They are trying to help. But usually, a situation of work life imbalance must be fixed by you and you alone. When things begin to really go off the rails, you will start seeing a more vocal and brash response.

You may start having arguments with your spouse, seeing your children react with tears because of your lack of involvement. Your friends may begin to alienate you. Customers will launch complaints and give you poor reviews for the work that they feel is lacking.

You may be shut out of joint venture agreement because of your poor performance. You never want to let things get to this stage. But if it already has, you need to take a step back and find a solution to achieve balance in your life.

Then, go to those who have complained and reassure them that you have taken steps to better the situation and rectify what was wrong. If possible, you can make it up to them in some way by setting aside some time to devote to their needs.

While some business models or careers in general allow for maximum flexibility and down time, others are far more demanding. You’re forced to adhere to a stricter schedule, meet firm deadlines and put additional pressure on yourself.

If you’re working for a company that demands too much from you, it may be in your best interest to look for another position within the company, or another company or job in general.

However, if you’re an online entrepreneur, then you have the ability to pick and choose which business model you are immersed in. Sometimes, you’ll start off in a business model that delivers quicker income, yet has you sacrificing your schedule to increased demands.

A good example of this is a work at home entrepreneur who started out as a service provider. In a position such as this, you are operating on a schedule that the client or customer demands.

In order to get the job, and subsequently the money, you may have to agree to tight deadlines that have you working overtime, which seeps into your personal life. If you don’t meet the milestones set by the client, you run the risk of not getting paid or having your feedback and ratings compromised.

If you notice that there is an imbalance in your personal and professional life, you might want to reevaluate your current business model to see if it is meeting your needs for flexibility and self-care.

For example, you may choose to become an affiliate marketer, where you are able to upload product review blog posts on your own time frame. Over time, your income could match or exceed what you are earning as a service provider.

Even as a digital info product creator, you may have certain deadlines that you have to meet in order to appease your affiliates and customers. If you find that the pressure is too much for you, you can switch to a different business model.

Another option would be for you to better manage your time as a digital info product creator. For example, you might outsource some of the tasks associated with your launches, such as sales copy or graphic design.

Regardless of what career you choose in life, chances are, you won’t even recognize that you are suffering from an imbalance between the time you devote to your career and the time you devote to your personal life.

Or, it could go the other way. You could end up facing extreme personal life consequences caused from working yourself too hard. You might have a relationship that is on the brink of ending.

You could have a health situation resulting from long hours and a lack of self-care. Unfortunately, most people aren’t aware until something bad happens. A better way to improve your personal life and your success is to be aware of when there’s an imbalance in your life.

There is no one who is going to come to you and alert you to the fact that you are spending too much time on one part of your life. You may hear complaints from customers or loved ones, but even then, you may not connect the dots.

If you start to see signs that your career and personal life are battling for your time and energy, then you may want to take a step back and analyze it to see where the problem lies.

If you want to prevent issues ahead of time, which is the best way to run your life, then you will conduct a periodic check in to see how things are going before they spiral out of control.

Depending on how chaotic your work and home life tends to be, you may want to check in daily, once a week, or monthly. You may even want to check in with your friends and family to see if they feel like you’ve been stretched thin lately.

Of course, the opposite could be true, too. You may have people questioning whether you even work at all because they see you doing everything but work on a regular basis.

Becoming aware of this issue early on allows you to quickly and efficiently correct your behavior so that you are devoting the right amount of time and energy to both your career and your personal satisfaction.

Adopt a Mindset Shift to Allow You the Freedom to Put Your Needs First > Work & Life Balance

Sometimes when we know our life is suffering from an imbalance between our professional and personal worlds, we ignore it until it simply can’t be overlooked anymore.

But if you can handle it responsibly, it will help you to be able to keep a gauge on what your needs are and take time off to address them whenever necessary. This keeps you from being in a position of working through any suffering or stress when you don’t have to.

There are different types of needs that you may have that would qualify for you to ease up on work and turn your attention to your personal life. For example, if you’re suffering from extreme burnout and exhausted, that’s a good reason to take a couple of days off, reclaim your sleep schedule and re-energize yourself.

If you’re coming down with an illness, instead of pushing through it and working yourself into a worse state of physical health, either take some sick time to heal or lessen your work load significantly.

Sometimes, there are issues that don’t warrant purposefully unbalancing your work-life routine – such as if the house needs a thorough cleaning. That’s something you can achieve in increments or by outsourcing it to a professional.

Types of time off may vary, too. If you’re suffering from a lack of energy, you may not need to take two or three days off. You might just need to schedule in a 20-minute power nap in the middle of the day when you’re most lagging.

You might just need to readjust the schedule so that your hours are different. For example, if your needs include something where you need to reconnect with your spouse or kids, then you can choose to work different hours instead of taking a lot of time off.

Strategically, you want to make the smallest adjustment necessary so that you won’t have to play catch up when everything calms down and you return to the process of devoting more time to a proper balance with your work and personal life.

Understand that it’s not only acceptable, but it’s responsible to ensure your needs are met so that you can be the best niche leader you can possibly be. If your mind is always on something else, you won’t be able to step up and serve your audience in the best way possible.
